When this story started unfolding, the first bit of breaking news was that Judge Reinhold and John Ashton’s cops Rosewood and Taggart would both be back and reunite with Eddie Murphy for the next Beverly Hills Cop film. Then, an apparent U-turn came when it was announced that, actually, nothing like that could be promised yet as a new writer was about to come onto the project. So… Taggart and Rosewood or no Taggart and Rosewood?

Here’s my understanding of what’s been going on. Both Taggart and Rosewood have appeared in the Brandt and Haas drafts of the script going back at least as far as last November. This might just be the underlying source of Moviehole’s story: a look at one of these scripts. They go as far as saying ” he definitely has a part to play in the upcoming Brett Ratner-directed sequel”. There’s no citation of a source …

Speculation has swirled about whether or not Jon Favreau would direct The Avengers for Marvel after he finishes Iron Man 2. Now we know the answer: he will not. And furthermore, Ed Norton will not appear in Iron Man 2. So there.

MTV talked to Favreau about The Avengers while he was promoting Couples Retreat, and his statement about directing the film was quite clear:
They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available. It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.  It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor. How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s …

I suppose we should have seen this coming. Over the last few months we’ve reported quite a bit on the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan film series — a franchise that has been all but dead since The Sum of All Fears failed to make a big dent in the box office. We know that Paramount has been planning to revive it, however, and thanks to films like The Hunt For Red October and Patriot Games (and their respective portrayals of the character by Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford) there’s quite a bit of interest in seeing the character continue. We’ve also known that Paramount wanted to skew the character younger. That being the case, of course they’re turning to the man who had a lot to do with reinventing another Paramount character for a younger generation: Chris ‘Captain Kirk’ Pine.

Variety reports that Pine is in talks to take on the …

Last week, we premiered one of the character posters for Toy Story 3. I wanted to quickly round up all the others that appeared on sites around the web. (We also had the leaked TS3 trailer on Friday, and the ‘real’ version goes live today at noon, so I’ll be updating and bumping that story accordingly.) And this is also a good place to throw a neat little tidbit your way: there was one ending scripted for the original Toy Story that wasn’t used, but was eventually adapted into a major plot aspect of Toy Story 3. It’s all after the jump.

First up, that bit from Toy Story that was revamped into Toy Story 3. The Pixar Touch blog prints this rundown of a possible conclusion to the original film:
As the kids show up, they start playing with the toys and the air is singing with the toys’ joy. The …

Bryan Singer says he wants to return to the X-Men franchise. Of course he does. While Singer has several projects lined up — a potential Excalibur remake/update, that Battlestar Galactica feature, and what should be his next, Jack the Giant Killer — the director now says he’s interested in going back to the superhero franchise with which he had such success in X-Men and X2. But what does that mean for the series?

Speaking at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, Singer said (as reported by THR):
I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast.
This may be just fan-appeasing talk on Singer’s part. But taking it seriously for a minute, what film could he make? Based on everything we know, X-Men: First Class is the film that’s up next, with a spring shoot …

You want the rights to some of the classic horror franchises to escape the clutches of Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes? Be careful what you wish for.

A lot of people really don’t like the Platinum Dunes horror remakes. Easy enough to understand; hell, as far as I’m concerned there are only two real Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, and they both have Tobe Hooper’s name on the director’s card. But people who will see and complain about the Dunes films won’t even touch the Saw franchise. (Which leads me to wonder just who is seeing the Saw movies to make them successful. Damn kids!) Where does that leave fans of a series like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is now passing from Platinum Dunes into the hands of Saw’s Twisted Pictures? More to the point, will we ever have to suffer through the marketing for a Texas ChainSAW Massacre?

Variety reports that Twisted …

Disney will release the movie trailer for Pixar’s Toy Story 3 online on Monday October 12th 9:00am pacific time, and to celebrate they are releasing a series of new character banners. Disney has given /Film an exclusive look at the character banner for Hamm, who you might remember is voiced by John Ratzenberger. Check out the full poster after the jump, along with a preview of the Rex character banner.

Rex’s character poster has been posted on MySpace. Click on through to see it in larger resolution.

Toy Story 3 is being directed by Lee Unkrich, based on a screenplay written by Michael Arndt, the Oscar winning screenwriter of Little Miss Sunshine. The story begins as Andy
is moving off to college, and the fate of his favorite toys hangs in the balance. We learn in the trailer, which was attached to prints of Toy Story’s 3D double feature, that the toys find …

BloodyDisgusting has confirmed that Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II director Ivan Reitman is 100% attached to Ghostbusters 3. He hasn’t decided yet if he wants to direct the project, but is definately on board to produce. This shouldn’t come as much of a shock as almost everyone associated with the first two films are also on board for a third film if it goes into production.

I have heard that Office / Year One scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg have turned in a script, and BD is reporting that the sequel script begins as the paranormal researchers “reopen” their ghost removal service after it has been closed for years. We’ve already heard that the film will introduce a new generation of Ghostbusters, who will be trained/mentored by the original crew.

We’ll keep you updated as to any further developments.

Michael Dougherty’s semi-anthology horror film Trick ‘r Treat has been the subject of a lot of blog talk over the past two years, and now thanks to this week’s DVD release, everyone can see it. So, of course, Dougherty is talking about the sequel. In this case, it’s one I’m very interested to hear more about.

Dougherty tells MTV that he’s got part of the first sequel mapped out. He knows how the sequel ends, and without giving too much away, that’s the most crucial part. Because while Trick ‘r Treat is labeled an anthology film, in reality it is a handful of interwoven tales. While focusing on one, you’ll catch glimpses of the others and in that way fill in some intentional little narrative gaps. And there’s sort of a full-circle narrative style going on, so the end is, in some ways, the beginning.  Once again, the organizing principle …

Sony has been developing a Marvel Comics spin-off of the Spider-Man villain Venom for some time now, but I never actually believed it would happen. Screenwriting team Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had written two drafts on the character before moving on to Zombieland. And before Wernick/Reese, the company had previously commissioned Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) to pen a take. It seemed like one of those projects that was just doomed to development heck. Apparently not…

But BFDealMemo has learned that Sony is talks with Spider-Man 4 scribe Gary Ross to rewrite the script and possibly even direct the Venom spin-off. Ross plans to begin the rewrite as soon as he finishes up work on Spidey 4. I enjoyed the hell out of Zombieland, and was actually really interested to see Wernick/Reese’s version. At the same time, I’m also interested to see what Ross will bring to the table. Ross’ screenwriting …
