Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

ad·dic·tive

adjective.

1) Causing or tending to cause addiction: an addictive substance.

2) Characterized by or susceptible to addiction: an addictive personality

3) Casual puzzle games

4) RPGs

There’s no denying it, folks: computer games can cause serious addiction. The worst offenders are deceptively simple casual puzzlers (case in point: Bejeweled, Popcap’s insanely popular first success) and deep, complex RPGs- both of which suck you in with their trademark “just one more level” style of gameplay. You’ll find yourself helplessly glued to your screen to play “just one more level” of casual action… or to get enough experience to gain “just one more level” so that you can equip your sweet new sword…

Rocketmen: Axis of Evil
It came from Uranus!

Buy: Microsoft Marketplace/PSN

Developer: A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games

The premise is simple: take a top-down twin stick shooter à la geometry wars. Throw in persistent RPG style upgrades, cell-shaded graphics and a tongue in cheek storyline. Season with a variety of weapons, garnish with four player co-op and serve on XBLA and PSN. Sounds like a winner, doesn’t it? Well, Rocketmen: Axis of Evil gets an awful lot right, which is as good a place as any to start the review…

Weapon of Choice

Buy: Xbox Marketplace (400 MS points)

Developer: Mommy’s Best Games

Ever heard of Nathan Fouts? No? Let me fill you in. He worked as the lead weapons designer and boss programmer for Resistance: Fall of Man, Ratchet & Clank and even the twisted Postal Series back in the day—designing literally dozens of brutal armaments, enemies and even a beautiful-sounding “Limb-Hacking Program” (this is a direct quote from his resume, folks!). However, all you need to know about Nathan is that he’s a man who really…really loves his guns…

Doom. Duke Nukem 3D. Marathon. Three games that need no introduction.

Wow, that was easy.

In all seriousness, these three games created the FPS genre as we know it. We know everything about them. We instinctively know the location of each hidden doorway, each weapons cache, each pithy catchphrase. They are second nature to us. They were the games that raised us.

But are they worth buying again on Xbox Live Arcade…for 800 points each?

Sometimes, after a hard day, I want to lose myself in an epic, immersive story. I want to feel the thrill of discovering hidden subplots, suffer the icy chill in the pit of my stomach as I uncover unexpected plot twists and engage in deep, meaningful character development. But you know what? Sometimes, I want to sit down with three mates and kill a whole bunch of communists with an atomic tank. Enter Heavy Weapon!

Hi there, and welcome.

I was recently reminded that my internet footprint, meagre as it is, currently floats diffuse and disconnected upon the web with nothing to holistically keep it together. Freelance photography, review writing and other pursuits may be very different, but I until now I haven’t had a way to display everything in one place without… Facebook.

However, now I do.

And…that’s it. I’ll soon be populating this site with links to my work (and play) as well as anything I desperately need to tell no-one in particular. Don’t worry, there won’t be any ‘ramblings’ or ‘musings’. If you like what you see then please let me know…or employ me if I’ve given you this website as part of my portfolio!

That’s it. Take it easy!

The bulk of my online free-to-view portfolio is available HERE.

It’s an strange mix of the sublime and the ridiculous. Naturally, I’ll be updating my blog as I add to my portfolio.
